4 Stretches & Exercises to Reduce Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a regularly used joint, often active without even realizing it. Many daily activities require a healthy shoulder, such as using a mouse, getting dressed, and brushing your teeth.

When the shoulder is compromised and exhibiting pain or stiffness, finding relief quickly is typically more than a desire but a necessity.

If you’re tired of heading to the medicine cabinet for a quick fix that can intensify problems in the long run, we have four chiropractic stretches and exercises that can safely relieve your shoulder pain and, as a bonus, contribute to the natural healing process.

How to Get Natural Shoulder Pain Relief Through Stretches & Excercise

Shoulder pain may be controlling your life, affecting everything from your work and social calendar to sleep and stress. Below are four stretches and exercises that will help you find comfort.

Cross-body stretch

Stand with your arms hanging at your sides. Pull one arm up, parallel to the floor, while keeping it straight, cross it over your body. Use the opposite hand to pull the arm closer to your chest while keeping your shoulders squared and level.

Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Shoulder Rolls

Stand with your arms hanging at your sides, deliberately heavy. Raise your shoulders toward your ears and roll them back, down, and forward. Use an intentional squeeze throughout the stretch to maximize the movement.

Repeat at least 20 times before changing the direction for another 20 rotations.

Elbow flexion

Stand with your arms hanging at your sides, holding light weights if possible. While keeping your shoulders squared and elbows close to your sides, bend one arm up, steadily moving your hand toward your body while keeping the upper part of your arm still. Squeeze at the top and hold for a few seconds before slowly lowering the arm.

Do this in three sets of 12 before repeating on the other side.

Tricep stretch or elbow extension

Stand with your arms hanging at your sides, holding a light weight in one hand if possible. Raise that arm straight over your head with the inside of your arm close to your face. Bend your raised elbow behind your head while keeping the upper part of your arm still. Use the opposite hand to support your arm by holding the elbow, then slowly raise the arm and straighten your elbow. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly lower.

Do this in three sets of 12 before repeating on the other side.

Bonus exercises to help end shoulder pain include:

  • Downward dog
  • Arm circles
  • Shoulder flexes
  • Wall slides
  • Child’s pose

Remember to always listen to your body and stop any stretches or exercises that heighten your discomfort.
